SPARTANS DROP FROM AA TOP 10 AFTER BUFORD LOSS;
GAC BATTLES LOVETT NEXT FOR REGION RUNNERS-UP
SPOT AND PLAYOFF HOME FIELD ADVANTAGE

BUFORD 42-7 GACS
By Brandon Brigman, Staff Writer
Sept. 29 Gwinnett Daily Post

BUFORD - What was supposed to be Buford's biggest challenge of the regular season ended just like the previous four games for the Wolves - a blowout win.

Fourth-ranked Greater Atlanta Christian hung with the mighty Wolves for the first half, but No. 2 Buford took advantage of some big plays in the second half to coast to a 42-7 victory at Tom Riden Stadium.

"I never thought it would end up like this," Buford quarterback Twoey Hosch said. "This is always a rivalry game. We knew they would bring it the whole game and it would be a four-quarter game. It was a lot closer than the score was."

Buford (5-0, 3-0 in Region 6-AA) led 14-7 at the half and on its second possession of the third quarter used a 10-yard TD pass from Hosch to Kody Case to make it 21-7.

On the next offensive play, GAC's Christian Robinson fumbled the ball and Dallas Lee recovered at the Spartans' 7. Two plays later, Demetris Murray scored his second touchdown to put the game out of reach.

"That was a big deal and got the ball rolling for us," Buford head coach Jess Simpson said of the fumble recovery. "I really thought we missed some opportunities in the first half and sort of shot ourselves in the foot. I was really excited the way we were able to come back in the third quarter."

Alex Hunt added another score on the Wolves' next possession in the fourth on a 35-yard TD run down the right sideline.

Even when GAC (4-1, 2-1) had the Wolves backed up the Spartans still couldn't stop them. On second and 12 from the Buford 10, Hosch hit Melvin Harris in stride for a 90-yard touchdown pass for the final score to make it 42-7.

"We had some good things going, but the wheels just came off in the third quarter," GAC head coach Jimmy Chupp said. "They're a really good football team and you can't let them get any breaks."

After not completing a pass in the first quarter, Hosch finished 4 of 7 for 130 yards and two TD passes.

"They've got a great team and played great defense every year," Simpson said. "We sort of found our niche in the second half and throwing the ball and we took it from there."

Friday was the fourth straight game that Buford has scored 40 or more points this season.

"We made some mistakes in the first half," said Omar Hunter, who had four tackles. "I knew if we stuck with our game plan in the second half we could have a score like that."

JayTee Swanson led the Buford defense with eight tackles and Case had an interception and two tackles.

After Buford stopped GAC on its second possession of the game, Cody Getz gave the Wolves good field position with a 30-yard punt return to the GAC 25.

Four plays later, Murray (16 carries, 61 yards) outraced the Spartans' defense to the left sideline for a 5-yard score. The PAT was no good and Buford led 6-0 with 4:49 left in the first quarter.

GAC responded with a 42-yard pass from Colton Chapple to Robinson, who also had seven tackles on defense, on third down to spark the Spartans offense. Matt Cape (13 carries, 40 yards) picked up another first down on a 9-yard run and the Spartans used a QB sneak on fourth down to keep the chains moving.

The next play Chapple threw a fade pass to Julian Horton at the front of the end zone and the sophomore made a leading catch for the touchdown. After Robert Boccolucci's PAT was good, GAC led 7-6 with 13 seconds left in the period.

It was the first time this season that Buford trailed at the end of a quarter.

Chapple finished the night 10 of 22 for 139 yards, one TD and one INT.

Horton was Chapple's main receiver with five catches for 74 yards.

Buford wasn't down for long though. The Wolves responded with a 10-play, 61-yard scoring drive capped off by a 5-yard TD run by Getz (eight carries, 71 yards).

After Murray's two-point conversion was good, Buford led 14-7 at the half and never trailed again in the game.

GAC's Ben Donald had seven tackles and Luke Davis had six stops.

BUFORD PICKS UP STEAM; PASTES GAC
By David Purdum
Sept. 29 The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Mash the gas.
That was the rallying call for the Buford seniors heading into Friday's clash with region rival Greater Atlanta Christian.
No. 1 Buford waited until the second half to mash the gas, but when they did, it was all over.
The Wolves (5-0, 3-0) handed the No. 8-ranked Spartans a 42-7 defeat at Tom Riden Field.
After a sluggish first half, the Wolves assumed control in the second half. They scored touchdowns on four of their first five possessions to put the game away.
Quarterback Twoey Hosch, who struggled in the first half, found his rhythm in the second. Hosch completed all four of his second-half attempts, including for two touchdowns.
Cody Case and Melvin Harris each caught touchdowns from Hosch, who finished 4 of 7 for 114 yards.
Demetris Murray and Alex Hunt ran for second-half touchdowns. Murray finished with 71 yards on 16 carries. Hunt had 47 yards, highlighted by his tackle-breaking 30-yard touchdown run at the end of the third quarter.
Buford jumped on top 6-0
on Demetris Murray's 5-yard touchdown run midway through the first quarter.
GAC (4-1, 2-1) answered on the ensuing drive on a 17-yard pass from Colton Chapple to Julian Horton.
Cody Getz's 5-yard run late in the second quarter gave the Wolves a 14-7 halftime lead.
Thanks to some booming punts by Alex Campos and some nifty punt returns by Getz, Buford won the field-position battle.
The Spartans started seven drives inside their own 20 and had difficulty sustaining drives against the hard-hitting Buford defense.
"We've talked about finishing, putting the nail in the coffin all season," said Buford linebacker T.J. Pridemore. "And tonight we did that."
In contrast, Buford started inside Spartan territory twice in the decisive second half and ended with an average starting field position around midfield.
Buford has won 43 consecutive region games in a Class AA.
GAC quarterback Colton Chapple completed 10-21 passes for 154 yards.

GAC'S FIRST EVER WIN OVER BUFORD IN 1997 LIFTED PROGRAM
By Will Hammock, Sports Editor
Sept. 27 Gwinnett Daily Post

Ten years ago yesterday, the Greater Atlanta Christian football program was still in its growing stages, nearly as green as I was as a young reporter.

As the new kid at the Daily Post, I rarely got to cover our Game of the Week but the more experienced guys decided to give me a feature game, Buford at GAC. Their reasoning: No way GAC would beat Buford, so they wouldn't miss an exciting game.

They couldn't believe me when I came back and told them GAC won 21-20. Other people around the state probably did a doubletake when they read that score, too, no doubt surprised that the fledgling Spartans had defeated a power like Buford.

But that's just what happened on Sept. 26, 1997, when seven-year-old GAC made the first game in its new stadium memorable from the start. It was only the program's fourth year under veteran coach Jim Lofton, who had a good feeling before kickoff.

"I looked up in the sky before the game and there was a huge double rainbow," Lofton said. "I said to (then Buford coach) Dexter (Wood), 'That's a sign.' Now when I see him I say, 'Dexter, I'm looking for a rainbow.'"

Lofton might not have felt so good after the game's opening play, a GAC fumble that resulted in a Buford touchdown. But the coach's young program had an experienced upper class, and the kids didn't panic. It might have seemed like Buford was on the way to a big win - the Wolves won 40-21 the year before - but instead GAC took control.

The Spartans led throughout until another late fumble allowed Buford to go back on top. In need of a late winning drive, they got it from senior quarterback Stanford Phillips.

Phillips led the march with a long pass to tight end David Ellis, now a lay coach at GAC along with Phillips, and then a game-winning TD pass to William "Andy" Andrews on a hitch-and-go route in the corner of the end zone.

The QB didn't go to his favorite receiver in crunch time because Nathan Burton, a future player at Georgia Tech, was covered all night by future UGA and NFL cornerback Tim Wansley. Lofton said he saw that, so he sent Burton on fly patterns all night to wear out Wansley, who also was Buford's QB.

"I threw away from Wansley all game," Phillips said. "I threw his way maybe twice. I threw to Andy Andrews and my tight ends mainly."

The strategy worked as unranked GAC pulled off a milestone upset that sparked an 11-1 season and a region championship. Some people around the state might not have been familiar with the Norcross private school as a football power, but things were about to change.

"I think everybody in the county and probably the state thought we'd do the same thing against Buford as we did before, we'd be overmatched and outmanned," Phillips said.

Instead they won and they haven't missed the playoffs since. Lofton and his successor, Jimmy Chupp, have built the Spartans into one of Class AA's most formidable football programs.

And one of the building blocks was a win over Buford in 1997.

"That was one of the crucial games of our moving in the right direction," Lofton said. "It was like the first time we beat Bowdon, we showed people state wide we weren't the same little team. To be able to compete with Buford, I think it was a statement."

the October GHSA newsletter. Here's an excerpt from
Executive Director Ralph Swearngin:

Some Changes for Reclassification This Time Around

An Executive Director of another state high school association
was asked what he was most looking forward to in his retirement
and his answer was, “No more reclassification!”

It is just about that time again in Georgia when schools are
reclassified and placed in regions, and I understand his sentiments.
Reclassification procedures would be less volatile if there were
a consensus about the priorities in the process. There is general
agreement that schools should compete against schools of “comparable”
size. There is less agreement on what “comparable” means.

There is strong agreement that travel time and time out of school
for athletic events should be minimized, but many educators still
view reclassification with the focus on how much chance there is
to get to the playoffs. The task is to get the same number of
schools of nearly the same size in regions that require little
travel. That may be a hopeless task at this point.

In order to attack this task, several new wrinkles have been added
to the GHSA reclassification process...Here are some of the changes
that will be in effect from the fall of 2008 through the spring of 2010:

1. A public school’s FTE count for reclassification will be determined
by averaging the spring 2007 count and the fall 2007 count. These
numbers are expected to be released in late October. The GHSA member
private schools submitted their current FTE counts in early September.
If a new school is being built either in 2008 or 2009, the Superintendent
in that system has projected the enrollments for the new school and
for all existing schools affected by the opening of the new school
through the 2009-2010 school year.
2. All schools with an FTE count of 1,850 or more will be placed in
Class AAAAA All schools with an FTE count of 525 or less will be placed
in Class A. Schools with FTE counts of 526-1849 will be divided equally among Classes AAAA, AAA, and AA.
3. There will be two alignments in class A – one will be for football only,
and the other will be for all remaining activities.

The rationale for these changes in the reclassification process are:
1. The largest and smallest schools have the greatest disparity in school populations within that classification. Placing hard numbers instead of a fluctuating percentage number will help keep the population difference in check to some degree.
2. A major problem in Class A occurs when regions are made large enough to have a reasonable number of football-playing schools, and then a larger number of non-football playing schools have to be included for all other sports.
3. By the end of the 2008-2010 cycle, it is estimated that there will be 420 member schools. At the beginning of the 2006-2008 cycle, there were 394 member schools.
The population growth is not occurring uniformly across the state. This presents
problems with excess travel in order to play schools of comparable size.
There will be excitement off the playing fields as well as on those fields for the next few months.

TRAIN THE TRAINER; THEN TRAIN YOUR TEENAGER!

Dear Parents:
Train the Trainer returns to Greater Atlanta Christian School
on Saturday, October 13; Register now!

As loving, caring parents we must realize that our children are being put in danger by an action that we encourage and provide. We are allowing more and more young people to get behind the wheel, only to realize that we may not be providing the proper knowledge and experience they need to keep themselves safe-and alive. The epidemic of inexperienced driving by our teens must be met with the same concern and prevention as drugs, alcohol or illegal activity.

Cause of death: An automobile crash
The reasons: Driver inexperience and youthful poor judgment

Greater Atlanta Christian School and the GACS Parent Teacher Organization hosted Train the Trainer in fall 2006 with great success. Since then, we have received many requests from parents to bring the program back for another year. We are excited to give you another opportunity to address teen driving safety, and we invite you to participate in Train the Trainer. Reece & Associates, a nationally recognized highway safety firm, and Porsche Cars North America are partnering to make available to parents at our school an innovative program to help us better educate and train our children to drive. Porsche is committed to keeping teens safe on the roadways and is offering this program at no cost to the parents.

The Train the Trainer program includes a classroom session and a hands-on driving and learning experience behind the wheel of a Porsche Cayenne SUV. Nationally recognized safety experts and members of the Georgia State Patrol teach the classroom portion. During the driving portion, professional drivers will demonstrate and train you in automotive-handling techniques that highlight safety and the importance of vehicle dynamics.

The three-hour Train the Trainer is open to parents of GACS students in the 8th to 12th grades. It will be held on October 13, 2007, beginning at 9:00 a.m. Space is limited, so please RSVP early. If needed, we will also open an afternoon session to be scheduled for 1:30 p.m.

To reserve your space, we have three options. To register online, please click here –when asked, create a new account. To register by fax, please fill out and return the attached response page. To register by phone, please call Christine Jordan at (404) 586-2100. There is no charge for this class.

Please note that this event is designed solely to train adults to be better teachers. Therefore, please do not bring your teenager to the event.

Sincerely,
Scott Harsh Kevin Langsett
SH Principal PTO President
